Guitar Lessons

October 27th, 2007 by Reader

The following post was provided by a reader of Munich Kids.

I am a patient native English-speaking guitar teacher with a Masters in Education.  I just moved to Munich from New York City, and I am excited to teach music to your kids (and you!).  Having taught in the classroom for 7 years and instructed guitar at two rock and roll camps for girls, I am eager to teach your children how to have fun playing the guitar.  For more info, please see munichmunichmunich.blogspot.com, email mariaanncincotta@yahoo.com, or call (089)189.55.99.7

Tollwood Festival

June 25th, 2007 by Deanne

The twice-yearly Tollwood Festival is in full swing.  This year (2007), the  event packed summer festival goes from June 14 to July 8.  It is held near Olympiapark.

Tollwood offers theater, music, cultural peformances, dance, food, art, and shopping.  Top name performers include: ZZ Top, Joan Baez, Foreigner, George Benson, MIA, and Al Jarreau.  The market and food stalls offer items from around the world. There is also an extensive program for children and teens. The kids’ tent is open Monday to Friday from 2:00 - 7:00 and on Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 to 7:00.  All of the offerings for kids and teens are free.

According to their website, the philosophy of the Tollwood festival is as follows:

“The Tollwood Festival is a beacon of cultures, ecology and quality of life.  From the beginning, the festival has striven to be the image of a multicultural society, which is why tolerance, internationality and openness are the cornerstones of every festival. This is visible at all levels, whether it be the cultural programs or in the structure of the market and the variety of dining offered.

The Tollwood Festival offers culture for everyone. This means that more than 70 percent of all the cultural events are free of charge, while the big theatre and concert events are offered at far below the usual local price.

From the beginning, Tollwood has been a forum for ecology and environmental consciousness. On the one hand, it provides a platform for important issues in the area and, on the other hand, it provides the impetus for ecological projects. Among these are the organic certification of foods at the festival, the campaign “Bio für Kinder”, commitment toward healthier mobile telephony and exemplary CO2 emissions.”

The festival is open on Monday to Friday from 2:00 pm - 1:00 am and on Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 am - 1:00 am.

Parking is limited and is at a distance from the grounds of the festival. However, numerous public transportation options exist, many of which stop at the main entrance to the festival.  A listing of public transportation options as well as a map of the area and the grounds itself can be found on the website or in the brochure.

Parts of the website are translated into English.

Culture workshops for children and teenagers

April 19th, 2007 by Deanne

The Kultur & Speilraum (Culture and Play Room) of Munich sponsors dozens of cultural activities for children and teenagers in two locations in Munich - at Pasinger Fabrik near the Pasing train station and at the Seidlvilla in Schwabing.

After a  quick perusal of their Spring and Summer catalogue (2007) you should find activites that will entertain and educate each of your children and satisfy their varied interests and hobbies.  Examples of upcoming events include: Art workshops at the Seidlvilla every Friday from 2:30 - 6:00 with different themes each session; Creative dance or Hip-Hop dance courses; Music workshops; Make your own music CD and learn how to be a soundchecker; Theater; Rhythm and drums; guided tours of museums for kids; Self-portrait painting; Film festival, and; a Children’s flea market!

Both locations have options for celebrating birthday parties.  Details are available on their web sites.

The fees for most events or courses are generally inexpensive.  Because each event is meant to be entertaining and meaningful for a specific age group, there are minimum and maximum age requirements listed for each event.  The majority of events are for children between the ages of 8 and 15, though you will find a few events for younger children, down to about age 4.

I have not yet visited the Pasinger Fabrik.  However, I have enjoyed the grounds of the Seidlvilla on multiple occasions.  The Seidlvilla is a lovely old villa in the heart of Schwabing (just off of Leopoldstrasse near the Giselastrasse U-bahn stop).  There is a courtyard with a garden and several picnic tables — a very peaceful place to sit and rest for a while or have a picnic lunch.   In addition to the Kultur & Spielraum program, the Seidlvilla also hosts a number of other programs for adults.  There are coffee cafe meetings, readings, lectures, and theater.    In June, they will sponsor a neighborhood-wide flea market.

All events and classes are conducted in German.  The websites are in German as well.
