Book Swap

March 19th, 2007 by Reader

Books are like clothes. Shelves (or closets) are full of them, but there’s nothing to read (wear) for tonight…

This is a modern dilemma, and at least on the book front there now is a light at the end of the tunnel.  Simply swap the books you don’t want to keep for new reading material.  Easier said than done?  You don’t know anyone who: a) lives near you, and; b) shares your taste in literature, and; c) reads English language books?

Time to check out the online bookswapper - a small, friendly community of ex-pats and Germans who share an interest in English language books.  This non-profit online-swap works free of charge, and the owners are happy to help those who aren’t seasoned surfers of the web.  All you need is access to the Internet and books you’d like to exchange for new reads.

Now, list as many books as you like - listing a minimum of 5 books earns you your very first “swap-token”.  With this, you can browse the catalogue and choose any book you like.  Once you’ve chosen your book, click on the “Swap Book” icon, and simply wait.  The book will be delivered to your door-step, as the actual swapping is done by mail.  Thanks to special rates for book shipments inside Germany (only 85 ct for your average paperback), the financial aspect beats that of most fleamarkets.

After that first swap, you earn one token every time somebody requests and receives one of your listed books.  No financial transactions - the swapper sending a book covers the postage.  So, it’s one book out -new token - one book in.  How simple is that?

English-speaking Pediatricians

March 14th, 2007 by Deanne

The following pediatricians have been recommended by Munich Kids readers.  If you would like to add someone to the list, you can add by clicking on the “comment” button below.  Also, if you would like to write a new post (rather than just a comment), write the content in an email and send it to munich_kids@yahoo.com. The content will then be posted by the website’s editor.

Dr. Christian Muehe and Dr. Karl Kugler have a very nice practice in Schwabing. It is in a new office so everything is bright and cheery. They have a pleasant waiting room for the kids with toys to play with. Both doctors speak excellent English and are very good with kids.  Several of the receptionists speak very good English as well, making it much easier to make an appointment.

Address:  Herzogstrasse 5, 80803, Munich

Phone:  089/ 330 3550

Nearest Public Transportation:  Bus stop and U3/U6 at Muenchner Freiheit

Dr. Stephan Boese-O-Reilly speaks very good English.  He is very patient and willing to take the time to answer your questions.  They have two waiting rooms, one for children who are ill, and one for children who are there for check-ups.  I’m not sure how well people follow that guideline, but it is nice to think that you could bring your child in for a check-up without exposing him to a lot of cold and flue germs.

March 14th, 2007 by Reader

Here’s something to boost your children’s - or your own - education. The
OnlinePolyhistoricum offers a highly qualified personal teacher who will
not only help you and your child with German schooling, but whose main
goal it is to awaken the yearning to learn in every one of his pupils.
To begin with, the teacher will meet your child on a regular basis once
a week for an hour or so in one of the many libraries in Munich. There,
they will find books and other media that will help your child achieve
his/her goals. They will also talk about their past week, identify new
interests, and find solutions to any problems that may have occurred.
The teacher will also hold an online chat with all his pupils once a
week at a designated time and will answer questions by email or by
telephone. There is also an online discussion platform for all pupils to
use, led by their teacher.
The teachers are all fluent in English and German as well as other
languages.
The Polyhistoricum supports both your child’s native language and
his/her acquisition of the German language: Books and other media may be
read in any language, but a certain amount of communication and written
work is done in German.
The Internetpage http://www.polyhistoricum.de is written in German, but
you can contact kontakt@polyhistoricum.de in English for more details on
this offer and a FREE TRIAL.

Kunst und Spiel (Art and Play) is a specialty toy and gift store.  Here you will find many one of a kind items.  They have a nice selection of wooden toys, puzzles and games.  They have a small selection of children’s books, in German.  They also sell some very nice children’s clothes.  Toys and children’s clothes are on the second floor, with no elevator, so it is not stroller-friendly.  On the main floor, they sell artsy gift items, many of them handmade.  Materials for art projects, such as textiles, art papers, etc. are also for sale.
